Learn More About the Care and Management of Your Livestock
Sheep and goats are closely related: both are in the subfamily Caprinae. However, they are separate species, so hybrids rarely occur, and are always infertile.
Ruminant animals include cattle, sheep, goat, deer, and several other mammals. These animals all have a digestive system with four compartments. With the aid of tiny microorganisms, these animals are able to break down grass and other coarse vegetation that other animals cannot digest. Ruminant animals typically kept as livestock can be divided into 3 different types: meat, wool, and dairy.
The proper production and management of sheep and goats is a relatively straightforward process. This makes investing in such a venture extremely low risk with a high potential for substantial returns. Overall, sheep are good protein recourse. Sheep need less land size and less input than cattle. With well management, the profit cycle is short in the sheep business.
Genetic Improvement in Sheep and Goat Project
Funded by Taiwanese Government and executed by Taiwan ICDF. This project started from 2015 in Central Farm, Belize. The main reason for Belize’s low productivity in sheep production is that the quality of breeding sheep is poor. This, in turn, is due to the fact that the paddock at Central Farm, which supplies sheep to farmers, is very small. Furthermore there is a lack of basic facilities and equipment adding to the poor efficiency of breeding activities, as a result of which production cannot meet the needs of farmers.
The management and technology of sheep feed are also poor, and there has been a failure to maintain pure breeding lines. Farmers lack any means of exchanging information, and lack feeding- and management- related know-how. Pasture and feed management are also poor. To improve sheep breeding and productivity in Belize the Project through the National Breeding Center aims to accomplish three main deliverables.
Improve and expand infrastructure at the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Center, Central Farm.
Introduce 87 head of quality breeding stock, renewing three breeding stocks and establishing a scheme for breeding stock selection.
Provide training and education for Central Farm staff and local sheep producers.
