Barbados Black Belly is more sensitive than the other two breeds. However, they are very disease resistant and parasite tolerant. These sheep can be raised with very little grain, and don't require intensive management. Therefore, the breed is ideal for someone just starting in the sheep business.
Katahdin has wide adaptability and good for many areas. They are also significantly tolerant of internal and external parasites.
Routinely rotate the pasture is a good way to break the parasite life cycle (3-4 weeks). Sheep may be moved to a new pasture to avoid ingesting the same parasites.
Ruminant animals include cattle, sheep, goat, deer, and several other mammals. These animals all have a digestive system with four compartments. With the aid of tiny microorganisms, these animals are able to break down grass and other coarse vegetation that other animals cannot digest. Ruminant animals typically kept as livestock can be divided into 3 different types: meat, wool, and dairy.
Worms are the most common internal parasites. They are ingested during grazing, incubate within the sheep, and are expelled through the digestive system (beginning the cycle again). Thus, the appropriate deworming schedule is needed.
